About the CSS National Dialog

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Center for Transportation and Environment (CTE) at North Carolina State University are sponsoring the CSS National Dialog, a broad-based "conversation" on CSS. The Dialog is supported by a Steering Committee with a broad range of expertise in transportation and related policy and projects.

The goals of the Dialog are to:

  • Deliver CSS principles and practices to a wide array of partner organizations
  • Strengthen and broaden the constituency for CSS
  • Discover new opportunities for partnerships
  • Bring new perspectives to the practice of planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining transportation facilities
  • Foster a community of CSS practice

The Dialog will be spearheaded by a series of five, one-day workshops to be held in various locations across the country. Each workshop will focus on a particular aspect of CSS, and use an exemplary transportation project, plan or program to highlight CSS best practices and provide a springboard for discussion and interaction.

After the face-to-face workshops are complete, the National Dialog will continue, here at ContextSensitiveSolutions.org.

We are building a Community of Practice, and ContextSensitiveSolutions.org is the perfect place to engage in an ongoing conversation about the integration of CSS in transportation decision-making. Our website - a Clearinghouse of information and host to the CSS CoP - offers many tools to share information and improve the way transportation systems are planned and developed. Participants in the National Dialog workshops will join more than one thousand other registered site users, as well as visitors to our site, in a range of activities designed to enhance the state of the practice. Our webinar series provides professional seminars in topics of importance to practitioners in the field; an online discussion forum gives site users a chance to ask questions and poll the field for expertise and advice on a range of issues; the case studies and projects highlighted here provide hundreds of ideas and lessons learned for those who wish to engage in a context sensitive approach to their work; the future development of podcasts and other tools will continue to provide a range of options for sharing information and building support for CSS industry-wide. In short, the National Dialog workshops are just the beginning of what will be a long, productive exchange, utilizing all the technologies available to us!
